0.61 - Town Hub preview, Thief-style visibility, 3D Audio for bots, Hiding Spots, and updated character controller

We're back! After launching Villain Vegan a couple weeks ago, we're back in the swing of things for some huge updates, and gearing up for entering beta extremely soon.

MAJOR FEATURES:

  • A new character controller: We've upgraded how the character moves and feels. In the meantime, this means that Q/E for corner peeking temporarily don't work, unfortunately. However, ladders are easier and more intuitive to use than ever, as is crouching and walking. You also have full air control - so you can be far more acrobatic than ever before.

  • Visibility Update: We've moved to a "Thief" - style visibility system. AI can see you from farther away than before, but the speed at which they notice you scales with distance, and how brightly lit you are. Your watch will helpfully indicate when you're very visible vs completely hidden.

  • Hiding: You can now hide in tall bushes, leaf piles, the large potted plant, and piles of mail. You're completely hidden while standing here, and AI will have a much harder time noticing you than before.
  • AI Smarts: AI can now see and fire through windows properly. They also prioritize sounds far better now by how loud and how far off they are - turning a loud TV on the other end of a silent house will draw them towards it, but other AI will come to investigate gunfire now as well.

TOWN HUB PREVIEW:

We're pulling the curtain back a bit and letting you see both what's to come, and what some of the overarching story is for the game. Who are you? Why are you robbing houses? And where are you?

You can visit each place once before you head off on your next robbery.

Thanks to the major changes we made this update, we've laid the groundwork to include the fully-realized version of these in the next updates, culminating in the proper start of Beta:

  • The Pawn Shop: Here you'll be able to chat up Rick to thrift for one permanent upgrade between runs (such as lower overall visibility), new tools (like a TV remote), or forgo that for a change in the next robbery that makes it easier (such as vines growing on the side of houses).

  • The Diner: Here, you can talk to the waitress to get one temporary upgrade for the next level. Some of these are REAL exotic cuisine, but we promise it goes down easy. These upgrades only work for one level, but will let you try out an effect similar to the permanent Pawn Shop upgrades for the next level.

  • The Post Office Box: We'll be adding in a regular update of your current progress in making money - and continuing the story.

OTHER UPDATES:

  • Foliage hiding spots have been added to both the Babysitter and Large House Demo levels.
  • Tutorial has been updated with everything added in this update. It also looks a little nicer now.
  • Light system streamlined to greatly increase performance.
  • Added updated foliage to both the Babysitter and Large House Demo. We're still deciding how we want to go forward with foliage.
