Keepsake County (in Beta) » Devlog
Keepsake County now enters beta! To commemorate this, we're giving away 200 free copies here on Itch.io, as well as putting the game on sale for the next two weeks. Enjoy!
An update for Keepsake County has been released, that moves Keepsake County into early Beta:
Major Changes:
- You have a face: Wave hello to yourself at the splash screen, and on wanted posters!
- Added the Key tool: Bound to Slot 5 by default, players can pick up as many as 4 keys at once. Using a key will instantly open anything, without leaving a trace. If you have difficulty with switching to the Key, reset your keybinds, which should resolve the issue.
- Added safes and containers: Players can now open refrigerators, dryers, vans, safes, and more for additional loot. Safes can be opened, but take a long time to lockpick, encouraging the use of keys.
- Added visible traces: While they've always been part of the game, we've now made the suspicious actions (lockpicking, sprinting, stealing large items, tying up AI) taken by the player visible to the player. This is how the AI figures out what you're doing and where you're going, via sound and sight. Take caution!
- Added Water: While water, for now, only appears in pools, it slows the player and makes noise if they move upright through it. It'll also slow the car down (coming later...). Crouching in the water avoids making noise, and partially conceals the player.
- Added Climbable Vines: Any surface with Green Vines can now be climbed like a ladder - this includes the sides of houses and tree trunks.
- Added Trampolines: Trampolines are a new mechanic that appear outdoors. Jumping off a trampoline will launch the player high in the air - just high enough to reach low porch rooftops, and maybe climb even higher...
- New Door Type - Sliding Doors: These doors open much faster than other locked doors, but beware: They're thinner to squeeze through, and AI can see you through them!
- Exterior Buildings: Cars spawn outside with goodies, while shacks, sheds, outhouses, drying lines, firewatch towers, and more dot the landscape surrounding each house. Trashcans can spawn shoes inside, while mailboxes can store keys...
Major Revisions:
- Nearly all previous rooms have been redesigned: Hide in airvents, ring doorbells, climb atop ceiling vans and light fixtures, crawl atop shelves, hide under tables, squeeze between boxes, open and run appliances to distract AI, and more.
- Greater Verticality with Rafters: Roofs now almost always spawn a version of a window entrance, and many of these have rafters, trusses, and plywood that can allow you to climb out of the house and back onto the roof! Enjoy far greater navigation options than ever before to outsmart the neighbors!
- Doubled the length of each night: While cops still arrive at 4 minutes, players aren't penalized until the sun rises at 8 minutes. The Midnight Bonus has been expanded to 2 minutes from 1, and getting the Open Late ordinance expands it to 3 minutes.
- Doubled carrying capacity: Thanks to the huge amount of new loot in the game, as well as the many new rooms, we've doubled the default carrying capacity, and doubled the Duffle Bag's size (so 4 times larger than before!)
- Nearly all chairs replaced with stealable, throwable chairs: Sick and tired of stumbling through kitchens? Always wanted a cozy folding deck chair for the camper back home? Now you can take them for yourself! Or lob them at the nearest denizen to make a swift getaway.
New Content:
- Added a new level and unique character - The Trucker: The Trucker lives far away from the Plains, in a new Woods biome! Enjoy plentiful cover and nonexistent police - but beware: The Trucker moves slowly, but his aim is impeccable.
- Added a new level - Hook Mansion: A new Plains level, this house tasks you with robbing a two story house in the middle of a cornfield! Wade through the corn to riches.
- Added nearly new exterior buildings, new roofs, new walls, and new room types: Steal kegs from the brewery, whiskey from the bar, laundry from the mudroom, books from the library, steaks from the freezer, paddle through kiddie pools, and burgle tractor trailers and worksheds! Climb atop AC units to get inside the ground floor, or leap to the top via trampoline! Use dormers to get from one side of the house to the other, or climb between balconies using vines.
- Added over 30 new kinds of Heavy Loot: Microwaves and stereos that turn on, laundry piles, casseroles, toys, pillows, garbage, birdbaths, and much more join Keepsake County's lootpool, giving you more options than ever before.
- Added RARE items: Players can now steal incredibly huge stacks of cash, and gun cases, from safes - worth lots of money. No, you can't use the gun! Why would you?!
- Added over 20 new regular lootable items: Steal tinfoil balls, whiskey, beer, pickles, garden gnomes, and much more!
- New levels of Audible Detail: Gravel now properly crunches underfoot, wood clunks, vents clang, and carpets whisper sweet nothings into your ear. Plus: You can ring doorbells to bother AI!
- New levels of detail? Carpets are fuzzy, counters and tables have crumbs, bathrooms have sinks, and stinky underwear, meaningless paper scraps, loose cords, and lost socks dot the floors of these homes - just like a real house!
- Tons of updated and new color palettes: The game looks better than ever!
Other changes:
- Leaning returns! Players can now, stationary, lean with Q and E. Although you can currently lean through geometry, and leaning while crouching stands you back up, you can't be seen from your leaned position, nor can you interact with anything you can see.
- Players can now use the Scrollwheel to switch tools. If this doesn't work, please reset your keybinds.
- The Bag now appears full when you can no longer loot with it.
- AI and loot are now properly lit, as well as double-sided. AI are visibly shadowed or lit by light sources. And no more instances of hanging clothing vanishing from view upon walking around them!
- AI properly perform a Fix animation upon discovering suspicious actions
- Bumping into AI now immediately alerts them.
- Soundtraps now attract AI faster depending on distance: Loud noises near AI cause them to move faster towards suspicious sounds, while gunfire makes them react even faster to see what the commotion is about.
- AI can now spawn anywhere in the level, so long as waypoint is there. This includes new outdoor buildings and landmarks, and any floor of the house.
- Greatly updated Tutorial with new mechanics
- Endless mode now loops between the four existing levels, endlessly!
- Added new loading screen for Woods biome.
- Added stars and Moon to the sky, rather than just lights.
- Added additional outdoor landscaping to the outsides of houses.
- Added additional decals to police cars.
- Matchbooks are updated to have unique art for every level.
- Removed whip crack, egg frying, and cowbell sounds. These served to warn players of the 4 minute warning, but ultimately were found confusing and are now redundant. These have been replaced with soundcues for warning the player that the Midnight Bonus is about to pass, and that it has passed. A rooster crows 30 seconds prior to the sun rising.
Fixes:
- Fixed instances of AI not properly voicing reactions to suspicious actions
- Fixed instances of AI freezing in place due to inaccessible suspicious actions
- Fixed instances of AI freezing due to inaccessible waypoints
- Fixed entire appearance of Rooftops and dormers to remove weird pulled textures.
- Fixed most instances of not being able to throw items while in range of AI or other usable items
- Fixed instances of not being able to hear an AI dialing, or the burglar alarm going off
- Fixed loading screen not appearing upon picking a new level
- Fixed instances where players could launch their car into the air by walking into it upon spawning, prior to driving it.
- Lowered overall volume of car while driving. Unfortunately, this has revealed a bug where footsteps can occasionally be heard while driving. We're working on it.
- Fixed many, many instances of improper z sorting on sprites.
